A Beginner’s Guide to Cannabidiol & Cannabis Therapeutics

Project CBD has created a beginner’s guide for cannabidiol & cannabis therapeutics to address key questions of CBD users.
In 2009, a handful of CBD-rich cannabis strains were discovered serendipitously in Northern California, America’s cannabis breadbasket, where certified patients could access medical marijuana legally. Thus began a great laboratory experiment in democracy involving CBD-rich cannabis therapeutics.

The advent of whole plant CBD-rich oil as a grassroots therapeutic option has changed the national conversation about cannabis. It’s no longer a question of whether medical marijuana works—today the key question is how to use cannabis for the maximum therapeutic benefit. But most health professionals have little experience in this area. So Project CBD has created a CBD User’s Manual for patients to address key questions about cannabidiol and cannabis therapeutics.

What Is CBD?

Cannabidiol or CBD is a non-intoxicating component of the cannabis plant with enormous therapeutic potential. Although CBD doesn’t make people feel high like THC does, it’s causing quite a buzz among scientists, health professionals, and medical marijuana patients who are using CBD-rich products to treat a wide range of conditions—chronic pain, cancer, Crohn’s, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, PTSD, cardiovascular disease, anxiety, antibiotic-resistant infections, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, and more. Academic research centers in the United States and elsewhere are currently studying the effects of CBD on these and other ailments. Scientists refer to CBD as a “promiscuous” compound because it confers therapeutic benefits in many different ways while tapping into how we function physiologically and biologically on a deep level. Extensive pre-clinical research and some clinical studies have shown that CBD has strong anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, anti-depressant, anti-psychotic, anti-tumoral, and neuroprotective qualities. Cannabidiol can change gene expression and remove beta-amyloid plaque, the hallmark of Alzheimer’s, from brain cells.

Which is better CBD or THC?

Cannabidiol and THC (The High Causer) are the power couple of cannabis therapeutics; they work best together. CBD and THCinteract synergistically to potentiate each other’s curative qualities. CBD enhances THC’s painkilling and anticancer properties while lessening THC’s psychoactivity. CBD can also mitigate adverse effects caused by too much THC, such as anxiety and rapid heartbeat. When both compounds are present in sufficient amounts in the same cannabis strain or product, CBD will lower the ceiling on the THC high while prolonging its duration. (“Relaxing but not intoxicating” is how one patient described CBD-rich cannabis.) CBD broadens the range of conditions treatable with cannabis, such as liver, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, which may be less responsive to THC-dominant remedies. CBD and THC both stimulate neurogenesis, the creation of new brain cells, in adult mammals.

What’s the best way to take CBD?

The most appropriate delivery system for CBD-rich cannabis is one that provides an optimal dose for the desired duration with few unwanted side effects. CBD-rich cannabis flower varietals for smoking or vaping are available in many medical marijuana dispensaries, but most CBD patients prefer non-inhalable products made with cannabis oil concentrates. Although banned by federal law, measurable doses of potent CBD-rich cannabis remedies are available in many non-smokable forms and can be utilized in various ways. The time of onset and duration of effect vary depending on the method of administration. CBD-rich cannabis oil products can be taken sublingually, orally (as edibles, lozenges, beverages, tinctures, and gel caps), or applied topically. Concentrated cannabis oil extracts can also be heated and inhaled with a vape pen. Inhalation is good for treating acute symptoms that require immediate attention; the effects can be felt within a minute or two and typically last for a couple of hours. The effects of orally administered CBD-rich cannabis oil can last for four hours or more, but the onset of effects is much slower (30-90 minutes) than inhalation.

Can CBD cure epilepsy?

Cannabis has a rich history as a medicine for quelling seizures and convulsions going back thousands of years. In the mid-19th century, the U.S. Pharmacopeia listed cannabis tincture as a treatment for pediatric epilepsy, and subsequent scientific studies have documented the anticonvulsant effects of CBDTHC, and whole plant cannabis. CBD-dominant/low- THC cannabis strains and oil extracts can facilitate dramatic improvement in some children with intractable seizure disorders. Between 10-15 percent of severe childhood epileptics who are given CBD oil products experience a near-complete cessation of seizures; most improve (with a decrease but not total elimination of seizures), and some children have worse seizures when they take CBD. Many parents of epileptic children have learned through trial and error that augmenting CBD-rich oil by adding some THC—or better yet, THCA, the unheated, non-psychoactive form of THC that’s present in raw cannabis flowers and leaves—helps with seizure control. The take-home message: Low-THC cannabis oil products don’t work for everyone. Patients of all ages need access to a wide spectrum of whole plant cannabis remedies, not just high CBD oil.

What is the right CBD:THC ratio for me?

Cannabis Therapeutics is personalized medicine. There is no single ratio or strain or product that’s right for everyone. Optimize your therapeutic use of cannabis by finding the proper combination of CBD and THC that works best for you. A person’s sensitivity to THC is a key factor in determining the appropriate ratio and dosage of CBD-rich medicine. Many people enjoy the cannabis high and can consume reasonable amounts of any cannabis product without feeling too high or dysphoric. Others find THC unpleasant. CBD can lessen or neutralize the intoxicating effects of THC. So a greater ratio of CBD-to-THC means less of a high. In some states with medical marijuana laws, cannabis oil concentrates and other products with varying ratios of CBD:THC are available so users can adjust or minimize psychoactive effects to suit their needs and sensitivities. Those who don’t like THC have the option of healing without the high by using a CBD-rich remedy with only a small amount of THC. But a low THC remedy, while not intoxicating, is not always the most effective treatment option. In essence, the goal is to administer consistent, measurable doses of a CBD-rich remedy that includes as much THC as a person is comfortable with.

Are specific CBD:THC ratios better for different conditions?

Some patterns are beginning to emerge. For anxiety, depression, spasms, psychosis, and seizure disorders, many people report they do well starting with a small dose of a CBD-rich remedy with little THC. For cancer, autism, and many other diseases, some say they benefit more from a balanced ratio of CBD and THC. Extensive clinical trials conducted outside the United States have shown that a 1:1 CBD:THC ratio can be effective for neuropathic pain. Note: The CBD:THC ratio is not an indication of how much CBD or THC is present in a given cannabis product or strain. Some people use cannabis products with different CBD:THCratios at different times of the day (more CBD for sunlight hours, more THC at night). Almost any cannabis strain or product theoretically could benefit a wide range of autoimmune and inflammatory disorders because THC and other cannabis components activate the CB2 cannabinoid receptor, which regulates immune function.

What is the optimal dosage of CBD?

An effective dosage can range from as little as a few milligrams of CBD-enriched cannabis oil to a gram or more. Begin with a small dose of high CBD/low THC oil, especially if you have little or no experience with cannabis. Take a few small doses over the course of the day rather than one big dose. Use the same dose and ratio for several days. Observe the effects and if necessary adjust the ratio or amount. Don’t overdo it. Cannabis compounds have biphasic properties, which means that low and high doses of the same substance can produce opposite effects. Small doses of cannabis tend to stimulate; large doses sedate. Too much THC, while not lethal, can amplify anxiety and mood disorders. CBD has no known adverse side effects, but an excessive amount of CBD could be less effective therapeutically than a moderate dose. “Less is more” is often the case with respect to cannabis therapy.

What should one look for when choosing a CBD-rich product?

Look for products with clear labels showing the quantity and ratio of CBD and THC per dose, a manufacturing date, and a batch number (for quality control). Select products with quality ingredients: No corn syrup, trans fats, GMOs, artificial additives, thinning agents or preservatives. CBD-rich products should be lab tested for consistency and verified as being free of mold, bacteria, pesticides, solvent residues, and other contaminants. Best to avoid products extracted with toxic solvents like BHO, propane, hexane or other hydrocarbons. Opt for products that utilize safer extraction methods such as supercritical CO2 or food-grade ethanol.

If CBD is so good, won’t pure CBD be even better?

Single-molecule CBD will inevitably become a federally approved Big Pharma medicine. Products infused with a crystalline CBD isolate, derived and extensively refined from industrial hemp, are already being marketed by unregulated internet storefronts. But single-molecule CBD is less effective therapeutically than whole plant CBD-rich oil extract. Scientific studies have established that synthetic, single-molecule CBD has a very narrow therapeutic window and requires precise, high doses for efficacy, whereas lower dose, whole-plant, CBD-rich treatment regimens are already showing efficacy for many conditions among patients in medical marijuana states. Whether synthesized in a Big Pharma lab or derived from industrial hemp, single-molecule CBD lacks critical secondary cannabinoids and other medicinal compounds found in high-resin cannabis strains. These compounds interact with CBD and THC to enhance their therapeutic benefits. Scientists call this the “entourage effect.” Numerous cannabis compounds have medicinal attributes, but the therapeutic impact of whole plant cannabis is greater than the sum of its parts.

Is there a difference between CBD derived from hemp and CBD derived from marijuana?

If you live in a state where medical marijuana is legal and available, look for CBD products made from high-resin cannabis (rather than low resin industrial hemp) that are sold in medical marijuana dispensaries. Unregulated hemp-derived CBD-infused products of varying quality are also available via dozens of internet storefronts. Many of these products are mislabeled. Compared to whole plant CBD-rich cannabis, industrial hemp grown for fiber or seed is typically low in cannabinoid content. A huge amount of fiber hemp is required to extract a small amount of CBD, thereby raising the risk of contaminants because hemp, a bioaccumulator, draws toxins from the soil. That’s a great feature for restoring a poisoned ecosystem, but it’s not recommended for extracting medicinal oil. Heavily refined CBD paste or terpene-free CBD isolate crystal is poor starter material for formulating CBD-rich oil products. The debate over sourcing CBD from cannabis rather than hemp will soon be moot as plant breeders succeed in developing high-resin CBD-rich cannabis varietals with less than 0.3% THC, the arbitrarily designated legal limit for hemp.

Is it safe to inhale hemp CBD oil fumes from a vape pen?

Many cannabis- and hemp-derived CBD vape oil products include a thinning agent, which dilutes the oil that is heated and inhaled by vape pen users.

Beware of vape pen oil that contains propylene glycol. When overheated, this chemical additive produces formaldehyde, a carcinogen, as a byproduct, according to a 2015 report in the New England Journal of Medicine. Look for products that entail a safer method of extraction like supercritical CO2.
Other additives to avoid: polyethylene glycol (another thinning agent) and, in general, flavoring agents, especially cream and cinnamon flavors as these are very toxic and should never be heated and inhaled. Look for cartridges that contain only natural, cannabis-derived terpenes. That means that the flavor of your vape cartridge came directly from the cannabis flower from which it was extracted.

Does CBD have any adverse side effects? What about drug interactions?

CBD is a very safe substance, but it can interact with many common pharmaceuticals. At sufficient dosages, CBD will deactivate cytochrome P450 enzymes, thereby altering how we metabolize painkillers, statins, blood thinners, insulin & more. CBD-drug interactions can be dangerous, but they can also help mitigate side effects while synergistically improving a patient’s quality of life. Cannabinoid-opioid interactions show great therapeutic potential. THC enhances the painkilling effects of opiates, while CBD is can reduce withdrawal and dependence. Patients taking Big Pharma meds should monitor changes in blood levels and, if need be, adjust dosage. Problematic interactions are more likely when consuming high doses of CBDisolate products.

Will big pharmaceutical companies control the CBD market when cannabis is legalized for adult use?

Only if we let them. Cannabis is a medicinal herb and it should be regulated as an herb, not as a pharmaceutical or a street drug.

Chelsea Leyland was able to move to New York and get a prescription for medical marijuana. Meanwhile, her sister remains in full-time care in the UK.

Brooklyn-based DJ Chelsea Leyland is prominent in New York’s art and fashion communities trots the globe playing international music festivals and graces the pages of magazines like Vogue and Nylon. Both stunning and articulate with a strong-willed commitment to living life on her own terms, Leyland is a far cry from what you might expect of someone with an incurable illness. The stylish creative-turned-influencer also happens to be an epileptic and, on account of that, a rising cannabis activist. But she’s careful, as she says, not to let her condition define her.

Living in New York by way of London, Leyland has access to medical marijuana, vaping high-CBD oil to treat her epilepsy. In the fewer than two years since she began using cannabis, she hasn’t experienced any seizures. “There was this overwhelming feeling of groundedness and wholeness like this is what must it feel like not having epilepsy,” Leyland, now 30, says of her initial experience with cannabis.

Epilepsy had always been a large part of Leyland’s life, even before she was diagnosed. Her older sister, who suffers from a more severe form of epilepsy, had been having seizures since she was a baby. As time went on, her sister’s seizures got progressively worse, causing brain damage on top of an already mild case of autism. Despite being five years younger than her sister, Leyland stepped into a caring role, with ER visits and hospital rooms as a frequent backdrop to the girls’ childhoods.

Leyland’s own epilepsy began to reveal itself when she was in her early teens. She recalls sitting in the back of her mother’s car when light flickered across her eyes. It felt strange enough for Leyland to be suspicious, although neither she nor her parents nor even her doctors believed at the outset it could be epilepsy.

But it progressed, causing a teenage Leyland to experience jerks that would force her to drop her morning tea or whatever else she was holding. “It became this ordeal in the morning, I was dropping and smashing things the whole time,” she recalls.

Doctors thought it was connected to sleep deprivation, anxiety, or even psychosomatic sympathy with her sister, but Leyland kept linking that morning jerk in her fingers to a discrepancy in her brain. Finally, a neurologist diagnosed her with JME, or juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, also aptly nicknamed “flying saucer epilepsy.”

As if being a teen isn’t hard enough, the odd though bearable morning jerks graduated into grand mal seizures—causing humiliating falls to the floor as she convulsed, her eyes rolling to the back of her head. She remembers once, at 17, waking up from a seizure she had while showering, her body bashing against the bathtub until her father, having heard the racket, broke down the locked bathroom door to save her.

“Every seizure you have affects your brain, affects your memory, takes so much out of your body, as well as your confidence to live like a normal person,” Leyland says. “You’re living in fear of having another one.”

Leyland spent more than a decade on a drug called Keppra to cope with her epilepsy, something she kept secret as she moved through life—attending school in New York and blossoming into an international DJ. Something she calls “the craziest career possible” for an epileptic who’s sensitive to late nights and strobe lights.

“All the moments of being young for me came with this coating of danger because fun meant I was putting myself at risk of having a seizure,” Leyland says. “But I was adamant that I wouldn’t let my condition define me and I would lead a normal life.”

Only years into her career did Leyland come out about her epilepsy: She was in Barcelona, jet-lagged after a red-eye, and feeling quite uncomfortable during a magazine interview. “I was absolutely exhausted and in the danger zone state where I could have a seizure,” she recalls. Leyland paused the interview to say she wasn’t feeling well and when the journalist asked if it was a headache, she admitted to having epilepsy. “It was a huge release,” says Leyland. She’d exposed her grand secret and suddenly felt empowered.

“That was the moment where everything began for me,” says Leyland. “A huge part of me felt like I didn’t belong in the world I was working in. I often felt that I didn’t fit into the fashion industry.”

She began using her influence to do collaborations with charity. She produced and DJed a yoga event for the Epilepsy Society in collaboration with fashion retailer Farfetch. The event brought together 100 people to practice yoga and raise awareness for epilepsy. She also teamed up with fashion line Marc Cross, which designed two handbags with a portion of the sales going to the Epilepsy Society. She became an it-girl-turned-activist and life became richer.

Around the same time, she’d heard of a little girl named Charlotte, for whom CBD oil alleviated hundreds of seizures a day. Still, Leyland was skeptical of cannabis miracle stories. Not until a British activist offered her a few drops of CBD oil before a wedding did she realize just how miraculous marijuana is for epileptics.

That night, she stayed up past sunrise and, though she was sleep deprived, felt fine. She thought the feel-good normalcy she’d experienced might be due to the cannabis. Soon after, she tried it a second time, even forgetting to take her regular medication. Aghast once she remembered—it’s not the type of thing she’d ever need to set a reminder for, her body’s discomfort would be enough—she finally credited the CBD drops.

It took only a few months for Leyland to wean herself off Keppra and, along with it, she said goodbye to the irritability and insomnia it induced. The medication, she says, made her depressed and even suicidal at times, but in England, there was no alternative. In New York, all she had to do was sign up for the state’s medical marijuana program.

Epilepsy tends to be one of the first conditions to qualify for medical marijuana when states legalize. There’s still a limited understanding of how cannabis quells seizures, but the stories of its efficacy are abundant, dating back to Ancient China. “It’s clear that there’s enough evidence out there that if you’re not doing well on traditional epilepsy medication, then you should definitely explore the CBD solution,” says Sid Taubenfeld, CEO of Tikun Olam Pharmaceuticals.

But Leyland’s sister, who’s too ill even to leave the United Kingdom, is deprived of such an opportunity. Though the UK is said to be the world’s largest exporter of cannabis, thanks to GW Pharmaceuticals’ Sativex, the majority of that prescription pot leaves the country. And in the UK, CBD cannot be sold as medicine. This recently got national attention when the first patient in the country to legally access cannabis oil, a 12-year-old boy with epilepsy who needs it for his seizures, had his prescription revoked by the country’s health department. After the boy, Billy Caldwell ended up in the hospital from a seizure, the health department made an exception for him and allowed him to regain access to the oil.

CBD products are widely available as food supplements in the UK, but because Leyland’s sister is so sick, she can only take medicine given to her by a physician. If GW Pharmaceuticals’ Epidiolex is approved in the UK, that would be her first chance at trying a cannabis-derived medicine.

“Our politicians are still wrapped up in reefer madness hysteria,” says Peter Reynolds, president of CLEAR—Cannabis Law Reform, England’s largest pot policy reform organization. “We’re not just marching in the street and putting on demonstrations, we’ve grown into a professional lobbying campaign.”

Leyland, for her part, is co-producing and the main subject of a documentary called Separating the Strains designed to educate policymakers and the general public about the benefits of medical cannabis. “The nucleus of our film is not just my personal story, but my fight to get my sister access to this medicine,” says Leyland. “I have a medical marijuana card, I have a physician I can trust, and I can just go to the dispensary and pick up my medicine, but my sister lives in full-time care.”

Leyland is expressly in support of medical cannabis only, defying the stereotype of a DJ who likes to get high. Her mission is simple: to use epilepsy as a case study to open up a conversation about the medicinal benefits of cannabis. “This is an advocacy led mission,” Leyland says. “And one that is deeply personal.”

7 Amazing Ways Cannabis Can Delay Aging

Old age – name one person who’s looking forward to it. Especially when what greets us is a litany of ailments such as creaking joints, high blood pressure, and failing eyesight. But studies suggest that compounds found in the cannabis plant might just help slow down the process, by protecting our cells from wear and tear, and improving memory.

That’s not to suggest that cannabis is some kind of fountain of eternal youth, but the plant’s ability to stimulate the body’s endocannabinoid system is key to its potential to protect the body against premature aging.

Endocannabinoid system and aging

The endocannabinoid system is a complex network of receptors and cannabis-like chemicals in the body, that together form a kind of communication system regulating everything from pain, appetite, sleep, mood, inflammation, and reproduction. Scientists have noticed that the system’s optimum function, otherwise known as endocannabinoid tone, decreases with age particularly in the brain where there is a reduction in receptors and endocannabinoid levels.

While still to be confirmed in clinical trials, the theory postulates that introducing plant cannabinoids into the body can stimulate endocannabinoid signaling, and with it slow down symptoms related to aging such as cognitive decline.

So let’s take a look at 7 ways cannabis might delay aging, keeping us healthy and happy for longer.

1. Cannabis could improve memory in old age

Yes, you heard it right. A study at Bonn University recently found that low doses of THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, actually improves memory and cognitive function in the elderly. But before we get too excited, we’re talking elderly mice, not humans. Three groups of mice were studied, aged 2 months, 12 months and 18 months, representing adolescence, middle and old age in humans. Each group was given low doses of THC and then tested to see how fast they could solve a water maze and recognize familiar objects.

While scientists noticed a decline in cognitive function in the younger mice, the oldest age group’s scores improved so much that they matched those of the drug-free, healthy youngsters. The authors attribute this extraordinary improvement in memory and cognitive function to “restored hippocampal gene transcription patterns” and a normalizing of the endocannabinoid system, suggesting that “restoration of CB1 signaling in old individuals could be an effective strategy to treat age-related cognitive impairments.” So for the older population, a little bit of weed might be just what the doctor ordered.

2. Cannabis could slow down the cell damage that leads to aging

There is natural wear and tear that comes with aging, but this can become accelerated through excessive oxidative stress. When energy is created in a cell, waste products called free radicals are generated. These are incomplete molecules that rampage through the body stealing electrons from other proteins, causing damage to our DNA and other cell structures. The result is oxidative stress, a kind of biological rusting where there is too much oxygen in our tissues, leading to a host of age-related conditions such as chronic inflammation, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, autoimmune conditions, heart disease, and strokes.

Our body does its best to protect us against the damage caused by oxidative stress by producing its own internal antioxidants. However, our polluted, stress-filled 21st-century lifestyles mean that in order to stay healthy we need a little extra help. Fresh fruit and vegetables abundant in vitamins C and E are a good source of antioxidants, but scientists have discovered that the two principal compounds found in cannabis – THC and CBD – are even more potent.

So much so that the United States Government issued a patent in 1999 entitled ‘Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants,’ on the basis that this antioxidant/ neuroprotectant quality be a novel discovery. It states that cannabinoids are “useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.”

3. CBD protects our brains from age-related toxicity

An aging brain has a tendency to accumulate excessive levels of glutamate, a neurotransmitter that is involved with nerve cell signaling. This can lead to glutamate toxicity, an overstimulation of the cell, and ultimately cell death. When glutamate causes cellular damage, it becomes an excitotoxin. Excitotoxicity is viewed as a potential cause of many neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system, as well as strokes and hearing loss.

In one study carried out on rats, the cannabinoid Cannabidiol (CBD) ‘was demonstrated to reduce hydroperoxide toxicity in neurons. In a head to head trial of the abilities of various antioxidants to prevent glutamate toxicity, cannabidiol was superior to both alpha-tocopherol and ascorbate in a protective capacity.’

Another age-related toxicity that researchers believe may bring about the onset of diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s is excessive levels of iron in the body.

Researchers from Pontifical Catholic University in Brazil examined the relationship between high levels of iron and cell death in neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, they studied the potential use of CBD, which they found may protect the rapid cell death associated with iron.

4. Cannabis can reduce chronic inflammation

It’s commonly held that chronic inflammation is at the root of many age-related illnesses. While it still remains unclear whether inflammation is a by-product or a direct contributing factor, bringing an excessive inflammatory response into balance again is generally believed to be of benefit.

Gary Wenk, Ph.D., professor of neuroscience, immunology and medical genetics at Ohio State University, has studied how to combat brain inflammation for over 25 years. He says, ‘PET imaging studies of humans have shown that after age thirty the brain gradually displays increasing evidence of inflammation. With advancing age, brain inflammation continues to worsen leading to a decline in the production of new neurons, called neurogenesis, that are important for making new memories’.

He coined the phrase ‘one puff is enough’ after suggesting that ingesting small amounts of cannabis over years can be enough to protect the brain against inflammation, saying ‘the evidence available from studies of humans and animal models of Alzheimer’s disease do indicate that long-term, low-dose daily exposure, during mid-life, to the complex blend of compounds found in the marijuana plant can effectively slow the brain processes underlying Alzheimer’s disease’.

Researchers have also found that CBD, the non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, could lessen the impact of inflammation on oxidative stress-related conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases and metabolic conditions.

5. Cannabis could help our joints and bones

You’re truly blessed in old age if you wake up in the morning pain-free. In the US 22.7% of the population are affected by some kind of arthritis, the leading cause of disability. Many people use medical cannabis as an alternative to prescription pain medication like opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), but Professor Jason McDougall a scientist at Dalhousie University in Canada, believes that cannabinoids found in cannabis could actually ease the pain by repairing the damaged nerves in our joints.

In an interview with CBC News, he describes how the nerves of an arthritis sufferer are like “wires that have been stripped of their coating.” He goes on, “they’re all bare, they’re all raw and responsible for feeling a lot of pain. What we hypothesize is that by locally administering these cannabis-like molecules to those nerves, we’d actually be able to repair them and reduce the pain of arthritis.”

Osteoporosis, a condition where bones become fragile and susceptible to fracture could also be a therapeutic target for plant cannabinoids. Not surprising when you consider that decreased endocannabinoid receptor expression can lead to the disease’s development.

In research conducted at Tel Aviv University CBD was found to make “bones stronger during healing, enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone tissue.” Researcher Yankel Gabet says, “after being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future.”

6. CBD can reduce stress and anxiety

Stress is a killer. We all know about it. It compromises our immune system, pushes up our blood pressure, can contribute towards diabetes, and cause depression.  In a study carried out on animal models at Buffalo University, researchers found that chronic stress brought about a reduction in endocannabinoids, and caused subsequent depression-like symptoms. Author Haj-Dahmane theorizes that “using compounds derived from cannabis — marijuana — to restore normal endocannabinoid function could potentially help stabilize moods and ease depression.” The next step for the team is to see whether CBD returns the depressed animals to more ‘normalised behavior.’

Other studies show that CBD reduces anxiety levels due to its interplay with the 5HT1-A receptor, a serotonin receptor found throughout the brain and in high densities in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala — all heavily involved in mood and anxiety disorders. Human trials have shown it to be particularly effective for social anxiety disorder.

7. Cannabis may regulate blood sugar levels

Over the last 30 years, the number of diabetes sufferers has quadrupled to approximately 422 million worldwide. Type 2 diabetes, otherwise known as insulin resistance, can lead to blindness, renal failure, cardiovascular disease, and strokes. But studies suggest that the cannabis plant might protect against the onset of the disease by lowering blood sugar levels.

five-year study conducted in the US on the effects of cannabis on fasting insulin and insulin resistance showed that regular cannabis consumers have 16% lower fasting insulin levels and 17% lower levels of insulin resistance than respondents who’d never used cannabis. The scientists also noted a smaller waist circumference in regular cannabis users; all of which suggests that the cannabis plant does have some kind of impact on the body’s metabolic system.

So, once again, the cannabis plant is full of surprises. We’re not suggesting that the retired population turn into hardened joint smokers, but it’s possible a sensible micro-dosing regime of organic certified cannabis extracts, might just be the ticket for prolonging good health and wellbeing.

Cannabis May Protect the Brain Against Stress and Injury, and Here’s Why

Each year, around 2 million Americans experience a sport-related traumatic brain injury (TBI). Soldiers are also at elevated risk for TBI; 17% of deployed soldiers to Iraq experienced a TBI, and among them, 59% experienced multiple TBIs. On a less overt level, our stress levels are on the rise. And to make matters worse, there’s a direct link between stress and increased risk for cardiovascular effects like heart attack and stroke. Both brain injury and cardiovascular events elevate risk for age-related brain disease like dementia.

Can Cannabis Prevent and Treat Traumatic Brain Injury?
Do we have tools at our disposal to mitigate these risks? Sure. Proper nutrition, maintaining healthy body weight, and regular exercise all help. Helmets do, too. But a growing body of research over the last couple decades suggests that there’s another potential strategy to making the brain more resilient to the damaging effects of injury, the changes associated with stress, and the effects of age. It involves cannabis.

What Happens When the Brain Is Injured?
It seems intuitive that the greatest amount of brain damage occurs at the time of physical trauma.  But for most closed head injuries and cardiovascular events, the majority of damage occurs during the recovery period—minutes to days after the injury. It’s this delayed response that inflicts long-term havoc on the brain.

How Does Cannabis Consumption Affect the Brain?
Many current strategies to protect the brain after injury act to reduce this secondary response to injury, but by the time these interventions are initiated, it may be too late. A better strategy would be to intervene before the trauma in at-risk individuals to weaken the brain’s own damaging response should one occur. Some elements in cannabis, like THC and especially cannabidiol (CBD), seem ideal for such a task.

There are three general mechanisms that damage the brain in the period after the trauma, and it’s thought that THC and CBD can protect against each:

Increase in excitatory brain chemicals.
Injury causes the massive release of the excitatory brain chemical, glutamate. Glutamate plays an important role in an uninjured brain, but its levels need to be tightly regulated. Too much glutamate can kill brain cells, which is what can happen following injury.

Increase in free radicals.
Injury releases harmful chemicals called free radicals that cause damage to brain cells by damaging DNA, impairing the cell’s machinery, and even causing cell death. Free radicals are a byproduct of normal cell function and we have mechanisms of neutralizing them to limit the damage. But after injury, their levels become so high that only potent anti-oxidants can limit their damaging effects.

Increase in brain inflammation.
Injury activates the brain’s inflammatory response to repair the damage. Unfortunately, this repair process can cause permeant changes in the way brain cells communicate with one another. It’s becoming increasingly appreciated that brain inflammation contributes to the development of age-related diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. Therefore, the tools used to protect the brain from secondary injury may also prevent or reduce the severity of cognitive decline with age.

How Cannabis Can Help Prevent Damage in the Brain 
The endocannabinoid system provides a framework for many of cannabis’ protective benefits. The cannabinoid type I and II receptors (CB1 and CB2) are powerful regulators of glutamate release, can be anti-inflammatory, and facilitate anti-oxidant effects.

What Is the Endocannabinoid System and What Is Its Role?
In support of THC’s protective benefits, TBI patients with THC in their blood were more likely to survive their injury than those without.
This important role for CB receptors supports the benefits of THC, which directly activates CB1 and CB2 receptors, and CBD, which indirectly activates them. CB1 receptors are found on brain cells and their activation by endogenous cannabinoids or THC dampens their communication.

Particularly, CB1 receptors have a profound ability to reduce glutamate release, highlighting the potential for prominent cannabinoids to suppress the harmful effects of glutamate following brain trauma. Since excessive glutamate signaling is a main contributor to early-stage damage after brain injury, this is an important place to start to limit the risk of severe brain damage and even death.

In support of THC’s protective benefits, TBI patients with THC in their blood were more likely to survive their injury than those without (only 2% of those with THC in their blood did not survive their injury, compared to 12% without THC).

Low doses of THC can be anti-inflammatory, but high-doses may increase inflammation, which highlights the importance of proper dosing.
THC’s protection against brain damage has also been observed in controlled pre-clinical studies with lab animals. Mice who underwent a simulated stroke had fewer signs of brain damage if they were given either THC or CBD prior to stroke, but only CBD was effective at reducing signs of damage if given afterward. Importantly, mice given THC for two weeks prior to a stroke developed tolerance to its brain-protecting abilities. This tolerance isn’t observed with repeated CBD treatment, suggesting that CBD may be a better long-term protective strategy because its strength doesn’t decrease with repeated use, and its protective abilities continue after the damaging event.

How were THC and CBD protective? Reduced glutamate signaling protects brain cells from dying after an injury and cardiovascular event. But the potential for behavioral recovery also depends on the levels of free radicals and brain inflammation. Low doses of THC can be anti-inflammatory, but high-doses may increase inflammation, which highlights the importance of proper dosing.

Cannabis Protects Against Subtle Brain Changes, Too
Cannabis may also make the brain more resilient to the harmful effects of chronic stress and the aging process. Both chronic stress and aging are associated with a reduction in new brain cell production in a brain region called the hippocampus, one of two known brain areas where new brain cells are produced in adulthood. These new brain cells are important for many brain functions including learning and memory, reducing anxiety and depression, and keeping the body’s stress response in check.

Activating CB1 receptors can facilitate the growth of new brain cells. In part through this mechanism, low doses of THC can preserve cognitive abilities in old mice by protecting the brain from age-related changes (covered previously by Leafly). CBD can indirectly activate CB1 receptors by increasing levels of the endogenous cannabinoid, anandamide. It’s in part through this increase in anandamide levels that CBD is thought to protect against the damaging effects of chronic stress on the brain.

More studies are needed to identify dose and duration of cannabis use to achieve maximum protective benefits, and whether there are some conditions in which cannabis could exacerbate the damage to the brain. But in the meantime, many may needlessly suffer the long-term consequences of brain trauma.

The pain of endometriosis can be debilitating at the time of menstruation; cannabis has a solution for that.

Endometriosis is a painful condition that affects 200 million women worldwide, with an estimated 1 in 10 (in the US) remaining undiagnosed.  Pain that is specific to women tends to be under-represented in research. Endometriosis is no different, and as such, many women seek alternative treatments; cannabis has proven to be effective in treating the symptoms of endometriosis.

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis occurs when the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, such as onto the ovaries, cervix, bladder, and any other pelvic organs. When the lining breaks down, during menstruation, that blood has nowhere to go, leading to severe pain, cysts, and infertility. Women also experience pain during intercourse and severe cramping. For some, the pain is as strong as if one were having a heart attack.

Endometriosis advocates urge medical experts to take women’s pain more seriously, and treat this as an issue deserving of research.

How is Endometriosis Treated?

Well, unfortunately, when research is lacking, so too are treatments. Many women face a litany of “try this” before being permitted the option of surgery. Some women, like Lena Dunham, end up having a hysterectomy after struggling with untreated endometriosis.

Doctors often prescribe opioid medications to relieve the pain. Many women end up going through a trial and error process to find the right one, sometimes never finding one that fully relieves their pain while still allowing them to function in their life. On top of this, they’re faced with seemingly endless side effects, all while battling the symptoms of their condition, and also facing possible addiction issues.

Opioids solve one problem (pain) by creating mass risk for another (addiction). With the opioid epidemic sweeping across North America, it’s no wonder that women are hesitating to resort to this medicine, even when over-the-counter pain killers can’t cut it.

The World Health Organization met in Geneva, Switzerland, last week to review the agency’s first-ever review of the health and safety of cannabis.

The takeaway: The UN drug committee found that cannabis is a “relatively safe drug” that millions of people are already using to help manage a wide range of medical conditions.
It’s an early step as the global health agency, an office of the United Nations, prepares to issue a recommendation to the UN on the “need for and level of international control” over the plant, which is broadly prohibited under international drug treaties.

The top-level takeaway: Cannabis, the report found, is a “relatively safe drug” that millions of people are already using to help manage a wide range of medical conditions.

As part of the report, the agency surveyed 953 cannabis patients from 31 countries. Most said they’d been using cannabis-based medicines for several years and are currently being advised on treatment by a doctor, although a majority said they’d also tried cannabis prior to getting a physician’s recommendation.

The medical conditions for which cannabinoids were most often used as treatment were back pain, sleep disorders, anxiety and depression, post-injury pain, and multiple sclerosis. Of those, pain, sleep disturbances, and anxiety were most common.

In the United States, where an estimated 2.2 million patients use medical marijuana, pain is the most common qualifying condition. Pain also ranked high among patients in Israel and Canada, while 30% of British patients reported using cannabis to help treat multiple sclerosis.

Globally, an estimated 3% to 5% of people have tried cannabis for nonmedical reasons.

Decreasing Opioid Use

The report also analyzed a number of studies, including two that found no significant demographic differences between adults who use cannabis medically and those who consume for nonmedical reasons.

One study found that medical cannabis users had higher daily cannabis use than recreational consumers. While medical patients were more likely to be in poorer health than adult-use consumers, the study found, patients also had lower levels of both alcoholism and nonprescription drug use.

A handful of other studies in recent years have suggested that medical cannabis may even help decrease opioid prescriptions, abuse, and overdose deaths.

“People with chronic pain can use less narcotics when you use or supplement their pain control with cannabis products,” said David J. Ores, a New York–based physician who was not involved in the report. “Also, medically prescribed cannabis brings patients into the healthcare system for associated problems such as depression, anxiety addiction, etc.”

Bring Down Research Barriers

But cannabis research, the WHO noted, is lagging. Despite immense public interest, especially in regions hit hard by the opioid epidemic, very few clinical trials have taken place—largely thanks to prohibition.

“Barriers to research in the USA include the difficulty of navigating through several federal agencies (including the aforementioned DEA, FDA), as well as research ethics boards and local and state oversight concerns,” the report noted. “There are also issues related to quality, quantity, and kind of product available from the current single federal source of cannabis for research use and the lack of adequate funding sources.”

Effective and Relatively Safe

The WHO report also identified a number of other developments around medical cannabis:

Appetite stimulation and weight gain occurred in HIV/AIDS patients who used medical cannabis. A safety study also showed that neither dronabinol—a synthetic form of THC, often sold under the brand name Marinol—nor smoked cannabis adversely affect patients’ viral load.

Clinical trials have shown cannabis to be an effective analgesic for chronic pain. The results indicated that vaping cannabis reduced neuropathic pain and pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Patients with Parkinson’s disease who smoked cannabis reported significant improvement in motor ability.

Nabiximol, a plant-derived blend of THC and CBD that’s sold under the brand name Sativex, has been shown to help reduce symptoms of multiple sclerosis, such as spasticity. (Canada and Israel have approved nabiximols for neuropathic pain in MS and for chronic pain related to cancer. The United States has not yet granted similar approval.)

Cannabis oil containing THC can be beneficial for patients suffering from dementia, motor neuron disease, and neurogenic issues such as bladder control problems and muscle spasms.

Considerable evidence suggest that cannabis and specific cannabinoids are effective at relieving nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy. The United States currently has two FDA-approved cannabinoids, dronabinol and nabilone, for this purpose.

WHO committee meetings are generally closed to the public. Individuals were allowed to present public testimony during an open session on June 4.

Metabolizing cannabis edibles

The THCA in cannabis needs to go through decarboxylation before it becomes THC, the cannabinoid with psychoactive effects. When you smoke, the burning process triggers the decarboxylation. When you cook cannabis, you make the same thing happen.

Smoked cannabis is processed through the lungs. As it leaches from the lungs into the bloodstream, it reaches the brain and Endocannabinoid System almost immediately. But, when you digest cannabis edibles, it goes to your stomach, not your lungs. In your stomach, the cannabis processes like anything else in the stomach. The digestive system breaks it down into carbs and sugars as well as the THC.

The intestinal lining absorbs the THC and sends it to the liver for processing THC into 11-Hydroxy-THC, a high potency THC. Because the endocannabinoid system reaches so many domains of the human experience, it is tremendously fertile ground for research. It’s like when the Europeans “discovered” America. All of the sudden, there’s a new, rich world to explore with strange new fascinations.

Only instead of tobacco, gold and the fountain of youth, the endocannabinoid system promises treatment for cancer, auto-immune disorders and depression. It’s the cannabis cornucopia of our brave new world.

The biggest players in the endocannabinoid system are two cannabinoid receptors most commonly referred to as: CB1 and CB2. These molecules are where the magic happens. Like all biochemical receptors, CB1 and CB2 are protein molecules that receive chemical signals from outside the cell. Think of them like the little black part of your TV that you point the remote control at. They sit dormant until they receive a signal, then they spring into action.

For many years, CB1 and CB2 stood alone. Now, however, scientists think they’ve pinpointed a new cannabinoid receptor, one that could crack open a new smorgasbord of healing possibilities.

The molecule in question goes by the name GPR55, but may soon be known as CB3. The molecule itself was first discovered in 1999 in various parts of the brain—the hippocampus, cerebellum, thalamus, etc. But newer research has discovered that it also hides out in more remote parts of the body, such as the spleen, gastrointestinal tract and adrenal glands. It’s also present in cancer cells.

So, what’s the big deal with it? If this molecule is indeed a cannabinoid receptor, that means the current understanding of the endocannabinoid system is vastly incomplete. This molecule is distinctly different from CB1 and CB2, which share a lot of similar characteristics. By contrast, GPR55 shares less than 15 percent of its amino acid identity with either.

That means it’s possible that this molecule, which is all over your brain and throughout several other vital parts of your body, is operating in a new and different way than we thought possible. It would be like discovering that nerves in your toes don’t respond to touch in the same way your fingertips do; instead of physical objects, they can sense magnetic fields.

The potential here is gigantic. It could explain why CBD oil is has such a diverse range of health benefits, many of which are proven through trials but poorly understood from a scientific perspective. If researchers could unlock the mechanism by which medical cannabis operates, it could lead us toward developing new and more effective therapies for all kinds of diseases.

But not just that. Discovering a new layer of the endocannabinoid system has enormous potential to teach us about the way that our bodies function—and fight disease.

The presence of GPR55 in cancer cells sounds ominous and dangerous, but it’s actually worth getting excited about.

While the exact functions and pharmacology of GPR55 are far from understood, if we can figure out what it’s doing in cancer cells, we’ll know more about cancer itself: How it arises. How it spreads. How to stop it.

And if turns out that we can affect cancer by manipulating a cannabinoid receptor or the body’s endocannabinoid system, we’ll have more weapons in our arsenal of anti-tumor remedies. That’s huge.

Among the many theories circulating about the properties of CB3 is that the body may have the ability to transform one kind of cannabinoid to another. If that’s true, and cancer cells use CB3 for some nefarious purpose, it could be possible to engineer a change-resistant form of cannabinoid that slows the progression of tumors.

Of course, that’s purely theoretical—and a long way off. Still, the possibilities are worth the hype. CB3 could present the next breakthrough in treating human suffering.

CANNABIS AND CANCER, PT. 2: THE TRIPLE THREAT OF THC, CBD, AND CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT ON CANCER

In our previous article “Can Cannabis Kill Cancer?”, we highlighted research that establishes evidence of the anti-cancer properties of THC and CBD (the most active compounds) or cannabinoids naturally occurring in cannabis.

Where much of the research of the past decade has focused on the success of individual cannabinoids to reduce and inhibit tumor growth, the most recent investigation has found a far greater effect through a combination of THC and CBD in concert with radiation treatment.

THC & CBD with Radiation Therapy – the One-Two Punch on Glioma

In a 2014 study published in Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, researchers from St. George’s University of London uncovered “dramatic reductions” in high-grade glioma masses – a deadly form of brain cancer – when THC and CBD were used in conjunction with radiation treatment, or radiotherapy, on mice. This study was the first to document the effects of cannabinoids on cancer when used with radiotherapy.

Dr. Wai Liu, one of the study’s lead authors, wrote about the significance of this groundbreaking research for the Washington Post. He and his team made several important findings:

‘A low dose of THC and CBD together was just as effective as a high dose of either compound in killing cancer cells and had the best overall effect, especially because it reduced the unwanted side effects of overexposure to THC.

Irradiation as the sole treatment had little effect on tumor growth. THC and CBD administered together marginally reduced it. The combination of both cannabinoids with irradiation had the greatest effect and stopped tumor growth during the course of treatment.’

Just as in a one-two punch, it is thought that because THC and CBD work on different pathways in the body, using them together “primes” tumor cells and makes them “more sensitive to the ‘cell killing’ effects of radiation,” Dr. Liu told Medical Daily.

As a result, tumor sizes were significantly smaller on the final day of treatment with subjects who had received the “triple threat” of irradiation coupled with THC and CBD compared to the control group. As the Huffington Post reported, the tumors had shrunk to as low as one-tenth the sizes of those in the control group in many cases.

Given the very low long-term survival rates for glioma patients – only 10% survive the first five years – Dr. Liu is optimistic about the results. He writes, “… it could provide a way of breaking through glioma and saving more lives.”

Dr. Liu also told HuffPost, “The results showed that the final effect was superior to the sum of the parts.”

The Synergy of Cannabis with Cancer Treatments

Jahan Marcu, Ph.D., Director of Research and Development of Green Standard Diagnostics, a lab that tests safe uses of medical marijuana, calls this effect synergy.

In his article as science editor of Freedom Leaf, the magazine of an organization by the same name that supports the marijuana legalization movement, Dr. Marcu writes, “combining CBD and THC with conventional treatments may be the best synergy for cancer sufferers.”

In addition to the St. George’s University study, Dr. Marcu cites several other studies that have achieved success in experimental models with combining cannabinoids and conventional cancer treatments.

The synergistic effects on cancer that Dr. Marcu and other cannabis researchers note function in two ways.

First, there is the synergy between THC and CBD documented in past research. CBD has been observed to enhance THC’s medicinal benefits while reducing its anxiety-producing and intoxicating effects. At the same time, CBD, having anti-cancer properties in its own right, complements THC by acting on different pathways.

Second, the interaction of THC and CBD with radiation or chemotherapy treatments produces its own synergy. Dr. Liu found that exposure to cannabinoids primed or sensitized cancer cells to the effects of irradiation. For Dr. Marcu, it is the other way around – chemotherapy and radiotherapy make cancer cells much more sensitive to THC and CBD.

Either way, Dr. Marcu concludes that because of the way cancer cells adapt, change, and mutate to extremes, making them resistant to treatment through both conventional therapies and cannabis when taken alone, “the best bet is combining cannabis-based preparation with conventional treatment for cancer.”

What is the role of the endocannabinoid system? Is it a valid science? And why should we care?
Perhaps, nobody seems to care about the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) because it is a complex “microcosmic” community. A community that potentially encapsulates something much bigger than science can easily explain.

Research has shown that the ECS metaphorically represents a microcosmic group of organisms. In fact, recent investigations have revealed that this microcosm behaves as a bridge between natural “mind-body” healing.

Thomas Edison once said, “you can’t improve on nature.”

Was he right? Does the endocannabinoid system have a natural ability to relieve people of many modern worries? Research suggests that the ECS controls multiple states of consciousness. To name a few, the ECS controls sleep-wake cycles, emotions, pain perception, attention, and other important neuro-biological processes. So why should we care about the ECS? What is it that nobody talking about?

Anyone suffering from fibromyalgia will tell you it can be devastating. On some days, simple chores like doing laundry or making breakfast can be exhausting, if not downright impossible. Just ask Teri Robnett, a Denver-based medical marijuana patient’s rights advocate who runs the Rx MaryJane blog:
“There used to be days that I didn’t feel like I could get through the day. I just wanted to cry and go back to bed.”
Only a decade ago, many doctors didn’t believe fibromyalgia was real — “hysterical” women were just imagining it. To this day, it is still misunderstood and often misdiagnosed. Commonly characterized as a chronic pain condition, a growing body of evidence suggests that fibromyalgia is a complex neurological disorder. Beyond chronic pain affecting muscles and connective tissue, sufferers often complain of joint stiffness, chronic fatigue, insomnia, general weakness, headaches, digestive issues, anxiety, and cognitive issues (e.g., “fibro fog”).

According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 5 million Americans — mostly women — have fibromyalgia.

What Causes Fibromyalgia?

While the cause of fibromyalgia is widely debated, Dr. Ethan Russo, a prominent neurologist and pharmacologist who has dedicated much of his professional career studying cannabis and the endocannabinoid system, theorized that fibromyalgia could be related to Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CECD).

The endocannabinoid system is like the Internet of your body — a communications network facilitating communications between your brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. The primary goal of the ECS is homeostasis — helping your body maintain a stable internal environment.

How Does Cannabis Consumption Affect the Brain?

When the endocannabinoid system is out of whack, health suffers. An imbalance can cause a whole host of issues affecting mood, sleep, gastrointestinal health, muscle spasticity, to name a few — symptoms that are also prominent among sufferers of fibromyalgia, thusly supporting Russo’s theory.

Can Medical Marijuana be Used as Treatment for Fibromyalgia?

Hard to treat and impossible to cure, many sufferers are curious about whether cannabis can help treat their discomfort.

Robnett, who is also the founder and executive director of Colorado-based Cannabis Patients Alliance, was one such patient. Recalling how in 1987 a car accident triggered her fibromyalgia, she later learned that an endocannabinoid deficiency could be to blame. She fell to the floor and cried, but her sadness was swiftly replaced with anger. Recognizing cannabis might be able to help, she asked, “How could the one thing that could supplement what my body wasn’t making [is something] the government could tell me I can’t have?”

For years Robnett took doctor-prescribed pharmaceuticals, but she detested the side effects and was concerned about drug interactions. “In 2009, I started medical marijuana. By 2011, I had quit all of my pharmaceutical medications and now use cannabis exclusively,” she explained.

Robnett said that at first, it took her a bit of trial-and-error, but it didn’t take long for her to become convinced cannabis was preferable to pharmaceuticals. “From season to season, even day to day, the severity of symptoms can change because of the weather, stress, or hormones,” Robnett said. “Cannabis allows me to self-titrate. By being able to vary how I consume and types of strains, I can more effectively treat the symptoms.”

At night, Robnett medicates with an edible. However, given the relative safety profile of cannabis and absence of adverse side effects compared to the FDA-approved medications, the data clearly suggests more research is warranted.

Robnett is happy with cannabis. “With cannabis, I can vary by strain and consumption method according to how I feel or what time of day it is. More importantly, over the 28 years, I’ve suffered from this condition, I found cannabis is by far the most effective and efficient treatment.”

Given the widespread frustration patients have with available treatments, and the devastating nature of fibromyalgia on those who live under its grip, it’s hard to find a morally defensible reason to deprive patients like Robnett the right to not only alleviate their suffering but find a new lease on life.
